Grey days

I forgot how much it hurts to have that which you want taken away. Applied for an internship as a window dresser at Ralph Lauren on Michigan Ave. (a DREAM job of mine!), and a little before 9:30 this morning, right as I'm about to hop in the shower, I get the call saying that the position was filled, and not by me. I feel kind of grey and hollow now. Does anyone else feel that way? What do you do when it happens? I can definitely say that I'm very glad I don't have to work today and plaster on a fake smile. Can't do it. Not today.

Enough with the depression. Let's have some fun, shall we?!

Guess what! It's fashion "week" (has been for awhile),  and that means all the spring collections are blooming on the runways. So far the best trend I've seen: Full, high waisted skirts. The repressed Lolita lover in me is squealing with delight! There are several skirts I've been designing and wanting to make, and now I have a reason to do so. Bo-yah!
Other trends to pay attention to: Late 60's early 70's inspiration; the stars you saw on Dolce & Gabbana's fall runway? Acne's got them now!; Soft white - More ecru and white with the barest hint of pink in soft pieces like flowing dresses, blouses and pants; Easter pastels - Think childhood and ice cream here people; And a little Great Gatsby.

Here's a glimpse of some of my favorite looks and designers so far:
Antonio Berardi:

Acne:

Ralph Lauren:

Mulberry:

Marc Jacobs:

Vivienne Westwood Red Label:

Oscar de la Renta:

Hope you all find some inspiration for this coming spring!

April Showers may bring May flowers...

But I'm thinkin' rain rain go away. Now don't get me wrong, I love to dance and sing in the rain as much as the next person, but come on Chicago! If we're lucky we get a random day of warmth and sunshine in which we get to wear or spring dresses and sports wear. Not this year! It seems it will be summer before we see any jacket-less weather. I am not amused. The nice thing is that the big thing to do is wear rain boots - or Wellies if you prefer. I have an awesome pair myself (my little sis bought them for me a few Christmas' ago) that I've running around in. I remember when I got them my sisters were all over Ugg boots, and to say the least I'm not a big fan. I did gush about rain boots though. So my little sis got me a nice pair from J. Crew for Christmas. Too bad Michigan was more snow than rain...and I didn't know how to wear them. You see, mine are bright blue with hot  pink polka dots and trim. I was all for the traditional yellow, green or black, maybe with a pattern. But that's quite all right, for skinny jeans are in, crazy rain boots are a go, and I feel as though I've warn my boots at least twice a week for the past two months.

The other fun part about rain (sadly I don't get to enjoy this often because it's too much effort to juggle) is umbrellas! Not going to lie, I would love to have a wedding (if I ever get married - gotta find a guy first) that requires umbrellas. Think about it. All the bridal party wearing matching Wellies and holding plaid umbrellas for pictures would be AWESOME! Or maybe I'm just crazy. Either way some of my favorite umbrellas over the years have been the Ralph Lauren ones (my mom had those), ones that have something on the inside versus the out side, and this clear one covered in gold fish that can be found over at ModCloth.

So with these slightly happier thoughts about rain wear to combat the bad weather I offer you a small collage to leave you all with a smile, even if it's small and fleeting.

P.S. Yes I have weddings on the brain...my sis is getting married! What else would you expect?!

Fall Collection

So, thanks to being a student in the fashion department at school, I am surrounded by FASHION. Whether it's learning how a trend cycle (for any product, not just fashion) works, how to set up a visual for a big name department store, or just discussing a favorite designer with the people around me. Because of this, and because I finally cleaned my room the other night, I came to realize that I need to come up with a focus for my fall/winter wardrobe. Will I be buying a ton of new clothes? Absolutely not! I have no room! But I do need to find something worth channeling.
Thanks to it being fall/winter, I'm wondering if I should go the androgynous/ gamin route. You know the Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face type of look , allowing me to wear my skinny jeans and structured tops with big sweatshirts without looking to mommy-ish.

Or, Should I go the route of "Dolly-Kei" as it's called, and do the more feminine, girly, layered look. I just can't make up my mind.

Then it got me thinking, why not mix it together and do the ballet routine? Could be fun... I just don't know.

Because of my indecision I decided to do something smart for once and did research. Say WHAT!?!?
As always, Ralph Lauren delivered with this awesome gypsy look that brought the two aforementioned looks together with brilliant ease.

D&G usually makes me smile, but sadly left me hanging this time around. At least the "Scandinavian ski lodge" with belted sweater dresses was delightful.

Marc Jacobs did not impress, Chanel reminded me of Yetis, Betsy Johnson, while fun, was not entirely wearable...
I'm rather depressed by the line up. The designers I look at have a certain piece-y, classic, romantic feel to them. I just wasn't feeling the romance this season. Heck, I'm ready to call it quits and ask for a miracle sex change so I can just wear men's suits. No really. No matter what, a good suit always looks AMAZING. I love the suits we sell over at Express, they have a rogue-ish sophistication about them.

But before I can wish on a shooting star Christian Dior reminds me why I enjoy being a girl:
